Moving to Warner Robins GA - Helpful Moving Checklist
Whether you are a novice or you have moved many times – this information will help you make a smooth move.
Moving your home can be an overwhelming experience, so John and I have developed this list to help you plan and organize for your move.
2 Months Before:
[] Room by Room: Go through each room of your home and decide what to keep and what not to keep. It would be helpful to know the room measurements in your new home so you will know what will fit and where. Donate any items you don’t want to keep or have a garage sale.
[] Moving Companies: Get an estimate in writing from moving companies from an on-site estimate (over the phone estimates may be too far off from the actual figure). Note: In the state of Georgia, it is required that all commercial moving trucks be registered with the USDOT. Make sure you get their registration number so that it matches the truck that actually comes to pick up your belongings on moving day.
[] File: Make a file up for you to keep all necessary paperwork, receipts, important information concerning the move and personal information you may need for emergencies with you in the vehicle you will be traveling in. Other information you may want to keep in this file would be: your Realtor’s phone #’s , Moving Company’s phone #’s, any paperwork you may need at closing for new home (if you haven’t closed yet) and of course, your inventory sheet (see ‘packing’).
5 – 6 Weeks Before
[] Buy Needed Supplies: Boxes, packaging tape, packing material and permanent markers. Also any special boxes for dishes, etc.
[] Mover and Confirmation: If you haven’t already chosen the moving company you would like, then you need to do that now and get written confirmation of date and cost.
4 Weeks Before
[] Packing: Begin packing items that you do not use often. Label each box with a number and the room location it should be put in at the new home. On a sheet of paper, write down each item in that box. For example: on a box you have put kitchen items in; serving ware, pots/pans, containers – label it KITCHEN #1. Then on your sheet of paper, write: Box #1 – Kitchen – contains: serving ware, pots/pans, containers. This way, you have a record of what is in each box, without writing it on the actual box (for all the world to see). Plus, it is very helpful once you get to your new home and NEED an actual item – you’ll know exactly what box it is in by referring to your inventory sheet.
Continue packing in this method a little each day.
[] Put in a Change of Address: With local post office.
[] Records: Arrange for any necessary medical and/or school records to be sent to your new doctors and/or schools.
2 Weeks Before
[] Prescriptions: Refill any necessary prescriptions you’ll need during the next few weeks.
[] Suitcases: Pack suitcases for each member of your family with enough clothes to wear for a few days, keeping in mind the temperatures/climate of where you are moving to.
[] Valuables: Make sure to put any valuables (jewelry, important papers, documents) in a safe box to carry with you in your vehicle trunk.
[] Go to your bank to empty out safe deposit boxes if necessary.
Day Before
[] Verify appt. time with moving company.
Moving Day
[] Before the movers leave, sign the inventory list and keep a copy in your file (which is staying in your vehicle).
Good Luck and we hope you have a smooth moving experience!
